The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) recently raised concerns over obscene and harmful content allegedly generated by Elon Musk’s chatbot Grok. The ministry send a letter to X (formerly Twitter), the social media website owned by Elon Musk, pointing out failures in moderating AI-generated content on its platform. The ministry highlighted concerns that the Grok and other services of xAI have been used to generate and distribute obscene or non-consensual images, particularly targeting the dignity and privacy of women. Through the letter, the government has also sought a report on the actions taken by the company, and the immediate removal of illegal materials.Now, X has submitted a reply to the ministry, however the officials described it as ‘not adequate’, saying the response by the social media platform lacked specific actions taken and preventive steps implemented.

Government’s demand for clarity from X

As reported by news agency PTI, the MeitY has asked X to provide concrete evidence of measures which the platform has adopted to prevent absence of harmful AI outputs. The ministry has also asked the company to share the technical details of moderation systems and escalation protocols. Along with this, X (formerly known as Twitter) must also outline future safeguards to make sure that Grok companies with India’s IT rules and content standards.Officials stressed that the government is not satisfied with generic assurances and wants documented proof of compliance.The case highlights growing regulatory pressure on global tech firms to ensure AI systems do not generate harmful or illegal content. Also, the government has repeatedly said that the AI platforms musk comply to the existing IT laws, including rules against obscene and unlawful material.Elon Musk’ social media platform acknowledged the issue raised by MeiTY. However, the initial reply submitted by the platform majorly focuses on general policies rather than specific preventive steps. Also, the company has not yet publicly commented on the latest demand of the Indian government.
