Google Gemini gets 'Personal Intelligence' to dig through your Gmail, photos, and search history to answer questions
Google’s new Personal Intelligence feature for Gemini AI is now in beta for paid US subscribers. It allows the assistant to access your Gmail, Photos, YouTube, and Search history for highly personalized recommendations. This upgrade aims to provide tailored advice, from car maintenance to travel planning, by understanding your digital life. Users control data access, with privacy safeguards in place.

Google is rolling out a new feature that lets its Gemini AI assistant tap into your entire Google ecosystem to deliver more personalised responses. Called Personal Intelligence, the beta feature, is now available for paid subscribers in the US.The upgrade allows Gemini to pull context from Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube watch history, and Search activity. Rather than just answering generic questions, the AI can now cross-reference your emails, photos, and browsing patterns to craft tailored recommendations.

How your emails and photos become AI context

In a blog post, Josh Woodward, VP of the Gemini app at Google, shared how he used the feature at a tyre shop. When he forgot his Honda minivan’s tyre size, Gemini not only found the specs but suggested all-weather options after spotting family road trip photos from Oklahoma. It even pulled his licence plate number from an old photo when he needed it at the counter.

The feature is powered by Google’s Gemini 3 models and works across text, photos, and video data. Beyond car maintenance, Google says it excels at recommending books, travel destinations, and planning trips based on your documented interests.

What Google won’t do with your data

Personal Intelligence is switched off by default. Users can choose which specific apps to connect and disconnect them anytime. Google emphasises that Gemini won’t train directly on your inbox or photo library — it only trains on your prompts and its responses to improve functionality. The company acknowledges the feature isn’t perfect yet. It may struggle with relationship changes like divorces, or misread your interests. Hundreds of golf course photos might convince Gemini you love the sport, when you’re really just supporting your son.Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can enable Personal Intelligence through Settings > Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps. The feature will expand to more countries and the free tier in the future, with integration into Search’s AI Mode coming soon.
