Off-duty woman cop with infant manages traffic in East Godavari district

KAKINADA: Amudala Jaya Shanti, a woman constable working at the Rangampeta Police Station in East Godavari district, has won the hearts of the public for her dedication to duty while balancing motherhood. She cleared a traffic jam while carrying her infant in her arms and ensured that an ambulance passed through safely. Though she was off duty and returning home after completing her shift in Rangampeta, she stepped in without hesitation. Even though the area did not fall under her jurisdiction and it was beyond her duty hours, she cleared the traffic, holding her baby, to make way for the ambulance. Her act—balancing motherhood and public service with rare commitment—reflects true dedication and humanity.Speaking to TOI, Shanti said she is a resident of Kakinada and is currently serving at the Rangampeta police station in East Godavari district. On Saturday, she was returning home with her two-and-a-half-year-old baby after finishing her duty. When her car reached the Samalkota railway station road, she encountered a massive traffic jam due to Sankranti rush. She noticed an ambulance trapped in the congestion and immediately swung into action, despite being off duty, holding her baby, and being outside her station limits.Shanti said she first handed over her child to her fellow passengers and pushed through the crowd to clear the way for the ambulance. For nearly 40 minutes, she managed the traffic alone until her baby woke up, forcing her to carry the child while continuing her efforts. With her colleagues joining later after being alerted about the severe traffic jam, she continued regulating the traffic for another one-and-a-half hours. She expressed happiness that she could finally clear the path for the ambulance after working for almost two hours—even with her child in her arms.Meanwhile, East Godavari SP D Narasimha Kishore appreciated the woman constable’s exemplary service and announced a reward.
