Telangana municipal polls on February 11; single-phase voting announced

NEW DELHI: The Telangana State Election Commission on Tuesday announced a single-phase schedule for municipal elections across the state, with polling set to be held on February 11 for seven municipal corporations and 116 municipalities.State Election Commissioner I Rani Kumudini told reporters that the election notification will be issued on January 28, with the nomination process beginning the same day.

Key dates for the elections

  • Notification & start of nominations: January 28
  • Last date to file nominations: January 31
  • Final list of candidates: February 3
  • Polling day: February 11
  • Counting of votes: February 13

After scrutiny and withdrawals, the final list of contesting candidates will be published. Polling will be held on February 11, with counting scheduled for February 13, and results to be declared soon after, Kumudini said.“This is the schedule for direct elections to all the 2,996 wards covering 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations,” she added.The total number of registered voters stands at 52.43 lakh, including 25.62 lakh male voters, 26.8 lakh female voters, and 640 others.The State Election Commissioner appealed to voters to actively participate and exercise their franchise on polling day.The Telangana Cabinet had on January 18 decided to conduct elections to municipal bodies and corporations at the earliest. Notably, the gram panchayat elections were held in December last year.
