INDORE: A 24-year-old runner from Delhi died after collapsing just 100 metres from the finish line during a 21 km marathon at Nehru Stadium in Indore on Sunday morning. The runner, identified as Aryan Todi, suddenly fell unconscious outside the stadium. Cardiologist Dr Bharat Rawat, who was running close behind him, immediately administered CPR after finding that his pulse had stopped.
Dr Rawat said such collapses are often reported in the final stretch of long-distance races, when runners are severely exhausted, dehydrated, and experiencing a surge of adrenaline, a high-risk phase sometimes referred to by runners as the “X spot,” which increases the chances of cardiac distress.Aryan was rushed to MY Hospital and admitted to the ICU, where doctors tried to revive him but declared him dead. He was later taken to Bombay Hospital, where his death was again confirmed.According to Dr Rawat, Aryan’s family said he was a regular runner, led an active lifestyle, and had no known harmful habits. Originally from Nepal, his family is now settled in Delhi, and his father is a businessman. Aryan had come to Indore for business work and was staying with his cousin. Doctors said the preliminary indication was cardiac arrest, though the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the autopsy report.
