NEW DELHI: As Puducherry gears up for the upcoming assembly elections, several key constituencies in the Union territory (UT) are set to witness high-profile battles, featuring the outgoing chief minister, a former chief minister, UT party chiefs, and a political heir.The Puducherry legislative assembly has 33 members, and elections are held for 30 seats. The remaining three MLAs are nominated by the Centre.
Previous elections
Voting will be held in a single phase on April 9. The counting is scheduled for May 4, along with the counting in Assam, Keralam, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, which will vote around the same period.
Key battles in Puducherry
Thattanchavady: The spotlight is on outgoing chief minister N Rangasamy, the incumbent MLA from the seat. The AINRC founder-president will face V Vaithilingam, former chief minister and current Lok Sabha MP, making this the most high-profile contest of the elections.

Raj Bhavan: NDA candidate VP Ramalingam, the Puducherry BJP president, will take on Vignesh Kannan of the DMK, son of former Puducherry minister P Kannan. The DMK is contesting in alliance with the Congress.

Lawspet: AINRC leader VP Sivakolundhu will be challenged by V Saminathan, former Puducherry BJP chief representing actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Sivakolundhu had previously held the assembly speaker’s post as a Congress member. Mahe and Yanam: Of the 30 assembly constituencies, Mahe and Yanam are geographically unique. Mahe is entirely surrounded by Keralam, while Yanam is encircled by Andhra Pradesh. In Mahe, A Dineshan of the BJP faces Ramesh Parambath of the Congress. Yanam will see Malladi Krishna Rao of AINRC contesting against Gollapalli Srinivas Ashok of the Congress.
Alliances
The ruling National Democratic Alliance in Puducherry comprises the AINRC, BJP, AIADMK, and the newly formed Latchiya Jananayaga Katchi, led by businessman Jose Charles Martin. While CM Rangasamy’s party will contest 16 seats, the BJP will fight 14 constituencies. From its share, the saffron party has allotted two seats each to the AIADMK and Latchiya Jananayaga Katchi (LJK).

Meanwhile, the Congress will field candidates in 16 constituencies, with the remaining seats allocated to the DMK.
