UK car crash: 2 Hyderabad students dead, 5 hurt after Ganesh immersion; both drivers arrested

HYDERABAD: Two students from Hyderabad died and five others were injured when two cars collided early Monday in Essex, UK. The crash occurred around 4.15am at a roundabout as a nine-member group of Indian students, all from Hyderabad, was returning home in two cars after participating in Ganesh idol immersion.Essex police arrested both drivers, aged 23 and 24, on charges of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury. They were part of the group.The deceased were identified as Chaitanya Tarre, 23, of Nadargul, who died on the spot, and Rishiteja Rapu, 21, of Boduppal, who died at a hospital. Both had moved to the UK earlier this year to pursue higher studies.Essex police said in a statement: “We received a call about a collision involving two vehicles at the Rayleigh Spur roundabout shortly after 4.15 am. The drivers of the two vehicles have both been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. They are currently in custody.”Chaitanya’s family said he had moved to the UK in Feb to pursue an MS degree. “We were first informed that there was an accident. When we called back his friends, they told us he had passed away,” a relative of Chaitanya said, adding that he had spoken to them just two days earlier. Among the injured, Sai Goutham Ravulla, 30, and Nuthan Thatikayala are in critical condition. Yuva Teja Reddy Gurram, Vamshi Golla, and Venkata Sumanth Pentyala are receiving treatment at Royal London Hospital. Except for Sai Goutham, all students were aged between 20 and 23.Relatives have appealed to authorities to expedite the repatriation of the bodies.
