'Objectionable language': Karan Aujla, Honey Singh summoned; Punjab women's panel flags songs

NEW DELHI: The Punjab State Commission for Women on Thursday summoned singers Karan Aujla and Yo Yo Honey Singh over the use of “objectionable language” in their songs. Taking suo motu cognisance of the matter, the commission has also asked the police to investigate. In its letter, the commission referred to two songs, MF Gabru by Karan Aujla and Millionaire by Yo Yo Honey Singh, which are going viral on social media. In letters to the Punjab director general of police, the commission’s chairperson, Raj Lali Gill, asked that a senior officer be assigned to urgently investigate the matter and take appropriate action. The police have also been directed to submit a report by August 11, the same day the singers have been asked to appear before the commission for questioning. The commission stated that it takes matters concerning women’s rights, dignity, and status very seriously. It has invoked its powers under Section 12 of the Punjab State Commission for Women Act, 2011.
