‘Locked me in room with venomous snake’: UP woman accuses husband, in-laws of dowry murder bid; hospitalised

KANPUR: A woman in Kanpur alleged that her husband and six others attempted to murder her using a snake over dowry demands. According to her, she was confined in a room with a venomous snake on September 18, resulting in a snakebite. Despite her pleas, no assistance was provided, so she contacted her elder sister, who took her to Government Ursala Hospital. Police inspector Vineet Kumar from Colonel Ganj said that a case has been registered against seven people, including the woman’s husband. Doctors confirmed that the woman showed severe snakebite symptoms and is receiving anti-venom treatment. “Her condition is stable but serious,” they said. The woman’s sister, from Chaman Ganj, recounted that the victim got married in March 2021. Shortly afterwards, her husband and in-laws allegedly pressured her for a dowry of Rs 5 lakh and attempted to strangle her several times. They demanded Rs 1.5 lakh for constructing a room, which her parents provided. Later, they asked for more money, and when her parents refused, on September 18, her husband and parents-in-law forced her to sleep alone, taking her daughter away. The next morning, she was locked in the room with a snake, which bit her. She was later rescued by her sister.
