UGC issues notices to 54 private universities across India for failing to follow public self-disclosure guidelines

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sent notices to 54 private universities across India. These institutions failed to follow rules on public self-disclosure. The guidelines, introduced in June 2024, require universities to share key information on their websites. Details must be easy to access and should not require login or registration. The universities were also asked to submit documents through their registrar’s office. They had to upload the same information on their websites. Despite reminders via email and online meetings, many did not comply. The UGC has warned that further action could follow.

What the rules say

The guidelines are meant to improve transparency in higher education. Universities must provide information about courses, faculty, infrastructure, research activities, governance, and finances. The website should have a search feature to help visitors find information quickly. The UGC says these rules help students, parents, and the public make informed choices. Transparency also builds trust and keeps universities accountable.

Where the universities are located

The 54 universities cover many states, including Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal. In Gujarat, eight universities were named. They include Gandhinagar University, JG University, KN University, MK University, Transstadia University, Plastindia International University, Surendranagar University, and Teamlease Skills University.

Universities respond

Some universities have responded to the UGC crackdown. Sikkim Alpine University said it has already uploaded the required information and submitted all documents to the UGC. It is now seeking removal from the defaulter list.Other universities have not made public statements. The UGC continues to monitor compliance.

Why it matters

Experts say disclosure is important. Students rely on this information to choose courses and colleges. Parents use it to check claims made by universities. Lack of transparency can mislead people and hurt trust. The guidelines cover financial details, academic programs, faculty, research output, infrastructure, and governance. Keeping this information updated is now mandatory.

UGC’s warning

The UGC has asked universities to take immediate action. It said continued non-compliance will lead to stricter measures. Inspections, penalties, or other regulatory steps are possible. This move shows the UGC’s focus on accountability and transparency. It may also prompt other universities to review how they share information.

What happens next?

Universities on the list now have limited time to comply. They must submit documents and update their websites. The UGC will check the updates. If the rules are still ignored, stronger action will follow. The notice is a reminder for all higher education institutions. Sharing accurate, accessible information is not optional. It protects students and maintains public trust.
