Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on 'dad tip' he's given to Sam Altman

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently shared the personal advice he gave Sam Altman about fatherhood. During a Halloween special podcast with investor Brad Gerstner, Nadella reflected on his own experience, urging the OpenAI CEO to “just enjoy” the journey. He mentioned becoming a father at a very early age and said he would “redo it” if possible. Nadella noted that watching children grow is one of the most precious times for parents, adding that he’s glad Altman is getting to experience it.When asked about the “dad tip” he has given to Altman, Nadella said: “I said just enjoy it. I mean, it’s so awesome. You know, we had our children so young, and I wish I could redo it. So, in some sense, it’s just the most precious time, and as they grow, it’s just so wonderful. I’m so glad Sam is experiencing it.”“There’s always a smile on Sam’s face whenever he talks about his baby; it’s just that his baby is so different. That and when he is talking about compute,” Nadella noted earlier.

What Sam Altman said about being a father at an older age

Replying to Nadella, Altman said that he is happy being a father at an older age. However, Altman admitted that he sometimes wished he had the same level of energy he had when he was younger.. He acknowledged that the lower energy level is the “harder” part of being an older father.

“I’m happy to be doing it older, but I do think sometimes, man, I wish I had the energy when I was like 25. That part’s harder. No doubt about it,” Altman explained. When asked about the average age at OpenAI, Altman guessed it was relatively young and estimated it to be in the low 30s.“It’s young. It’s not crazy young, not like most Silicon Valley startups. I don’t know, maybe low 30s average,” Altman added.
