Dues recovered, banks must stop charging interest on loans: Mallya

Bengaluru: Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya has urged Karnataka HC to direct a consortium of banks to stop charging interest on loans already recovered from him and his defunct Kingfisher Airlines, claiming the recoveries have exceeded the dues.Appearing for Mallya, advocate Sajan Poovayya said recoveries had “surpassed the loan amount,” citing an ED release that pegged recovered sums at Rs 7,181 crore and a finance ministry report showing assets worth about Rs 14,000 crore restored to banks.Banks’ counsel Vikram Huilgol opposed the plea, saying Mallya could not invoke Article 226 while evading Indian courts and that recoveries under PMLA were provisional.Justice Lalitha Kanneghanti said finality would come only when Mallya submitted to proceedings. The court granted time till Nov 10 for objections and listed the case for Nov 12. Mallya claims Rs 10,400 crore has been recovered against total dues of Rs 6,200 crore.
