Delhi blast: Cleric among 3 with 'links to Umar' detained from Haldwani

DEHRADUN/NAINITAL: Three persons including a cleric associated with a local mosque in Haldwani’s Banphoolpura area in Nainital district were detained by a team led by central agencies probing the Delhi blast case for their alleged links with main accused, Umar-un-Nabi.“The team, which came from Delhi, was accompanied by local police units. The investigators of the blast detained a cleric of a mosque following the findings of the call detail record of Umar, who allegedly triggered the blast in his car next to Red Fort. The call details indicated that the cleric was in touch with Umar,” said the officer, requesting anonymity.“Two others were also detained during the raid, and all three are being questioned by the agencies who found strong evidence against them,” the officer added. As per the details, the raid was conducted on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. The team was assisted by personnel of the Nainital district police unit and Uttarakhand special task force (STF). A senior police officer of Uttarakhand police told TOI that the raid was carried out around 2:30am.Banphoolpura, an area with a large minority population, witnessed riots last Feb in which five people were killed. It was purportedly triggered after residents clashed with the local administration and police who were carrying out an anti-encroachment drive in the area.Meanwhile, heavy police force has been deployed in Banphoolpura following the detention of the three suspects.Nainital SSP, Manjunath TC, said, “The force, comprising personnel from more than five police stations, has been deployed to ensure law and order. We are also strictly monitoring social media activities to check for misinformation or rumours being spread over the development.”
