Hoax bomb threat: Hyderabad flight diverted to Mumbai; RGIA police registers a case

HYDERABAD: An IndiGo flight from Kuwait to Hyderabad early Tuesday was diverted mid-air to Mumbai after the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Hyderabad received an email threat of a suicide-bomb attack. It turned out to be a hoax and flyers reached Hyderabad on another flight by the operator later.RGIA police registered a case on a complaint made by GMR Airport officials. In his complaint, Mohammed Abdul Wasay, GM (security and vigilance) of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), cited two messages received at 5.12am and 7.04am on Dec 2.Sent from anonymous mail2tor addresses and copied to several GMR and Kuwait Airways service IDs, the mails said anti-social elements planted remote-controlled explosives aboard the aircraft and intended to detonate them on landing. The senders demanded RGIA authorities divert the aircraft and evacuate terminal buildings. The plot is sanctioned by a “fatwa”, the senders said.On receiving the mail, city airport security team alerted the authorities and the flight was diverted to Mumbai. It took off from Kuwait at 1.31am and landed in Mumbai at 7.45am. After a thorough check, the Mumbai airport security staff declared the threat a hoax. Flyers finally reached Hyderabad at 3.46pm.RGIA police registered a case under sections 351(4) (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) and 353(2) (statements conducing to public mischief) of the BNS and section 66(D) of the IT Act.
