Delhi CM Rekha Gupta attack case: Police detain friend of Sakariya Rajesh; transferred money to main accused

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police have detained a friend of the man accused of attacking chief minister Rekha Gupta earlier this week, officials said on Friday.The man, held in Rajkot, Gujarat, had allegedly transferred money to the accused, Rajesh Khimjibhai. Police are also tracking at least ten others who were in contact with him through calls and online chats.One suspect is expected to be brought to Delhi by Friday evening, while statements of five others will be recorded by a police team stationed in Rajkot.The assault took place on Wednesday morning during a public hearing at Gupta’s Civil Lines camp office. Her office described the attack as part of a “well-planned conspiracy to kill her”.Khimjibhai from Rajkot was arrested immediately after the incident. Police say he has a criminal record and has previously been booked in at least five cases, including a knife attack. Investigators allege he arrived in Delhi two days earlier, carried out reconnaissance near the chief minister’s residence and office, and was spotted on CCTV in the area.An FIR has been registered under charges including attempt to murder, assault on a public servant and obstruction. Khimjibhai has been remanded in police custody for five days and is being interrogated at Civil Lines police station.Rekha Gupta, in a statement on X, said the attack was “not just an attack on me, but a cowardly attempt on our resolve to serve Delhi”. She assured supporters she was recovering, adding: “Such attacks can never break my spirit or my commitment to serving the public.”
