I got a lot of love for him,” Smith said. “He did a great, great job for First Take. Anything that I needed him to do, he has always been there for me. Sharpe’s ESPN departure came after he was named in an April sexual assault lawsuit filed by a woman with whom he had been involved. The suit caught ESPN by surprise—Sharpe still appeared on First Take that same day—but the fallout escalated quickly. He soon announced a leave of absence, and by July, ESPN formalized his exit. The lawsuit was ultimately settled with a payout, but the reputational damage has lingered.
