Indian-origin US Congressman Shri Thanedar faced racist attacks online over his English language after conservative social media account highlighted his remarks on US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), triggering reactions that mocked his accent, while others criticised the post for fuelling xenophobic attacks against an immigrant lawmaker.The post came amid intense national attention on immigration enforcement following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old American woman Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis by an ICE agent during a federal operation on January 7, an incident that has sparked widespread protests in the US.In response to the incident, Thanedar announced his intention to introduce legislation aimed at dismantling ICE, arguing that the agency’s enforcement authority should be ended and its functions reassigned to other federal bodies amid concerns over use of force and accountability.Following the post, some users posted comments such as, “Foreigners shouldn’t be allowed to serve in elected office in the US,” and “Deport him back to India until he can at the very least, learn to speak English.” Another user said, “I can’t believe this thing was elected. We are not a serious country.”However, several users pushed back, calling out the post and the responses as racist and xenophobic, and defended Thanedar as a duly elected American lawmaker.
Thanedar slams ICE after Minneapolis shooting
Thanedar announced his intention to introduce legislation to dismantle the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and end its current enforcement authority. The bill, titled the Abolish ICE Act, followed the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good during an ICE operation in Minneapolis.“The tragic death of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, a 37-year-old mother fatally shot by an ICE agent, shows that ICE cannot be reformed and must be abolished. The Abolish ICE Act is a step toward justice, accountability, and a more humane approach to immigration policy,” Thanedar said.He added, “When an agency’s structure consistently produces harm instead of justice, there is no way to reform it. We must fundamentally change the way we approach immigration.”Thanedar and other supporters argued that immigration enforcement could be handled more effectively and lawfully by other federal agencies, while critics of ICE have long said its structure and methods have led to repeated abuses and a lack of accountability.
