One of the most auspicious days in Hinduism is Purnima, when the Moon is at its highest point and radiates energy everywhere. Every month, devotees observe Satyanarayan Puja, another manifestation of Shri Hari, and fast on Purnima, a day dedicated to honoring Lord Vishnu. According to Hindu Panchang, Purnima that falls in the month of Magha is observed as Magha Purnima. Magha Purnima will be celebrated on February 1, 2026, this month.

Magha Purnima 2026: Significance

According to Hindu Scriptures, Magha Purnima is one of the most auspicious day. The day is purely dedicated to honor Lord Vishnu and deity Chandrama. People observe satyanarayan vrat and those who don’t observe fast conduct satayanarayan puja at home. The Purnima that occurs on the full moon day (Purnima) in the month of Magha (February), is known as Magha Purnima. For Hindus, this day is very important both religiously and spiritually. People engage in a variety of spiritual and religious practices on this holy day, such as taking a holy bath in holy Ganga, doing charity, distributing food and clothes etc.

Spiritual Importance

Bathing in a sacred river, such as the Ganga, Yamuna, or any other sacred body of water is believed to remove all the sins committed in the past birth and people will be rewarded by the God as this day marks the end of the holy month of Magha.

Observe fast

Devotees observe sacred fast on Purnima Tithi as the day is purely dedicated to worship Lord Vishnu so people keep fast from dawn to dusk.

Relation to the Magha Mela

Since, this is the last day of Magha mela, which is happening in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh and on Magha Purnima, lakhs of people will gather to take a holy dip in Ganga river.

Honoring the gods

Devotees worship Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi and Chandrama on this day. People believe that devotional actions lead to moksha, or salvation.

Charity and Donations

According to Hindu texts, one can maximize their spiritual blessings on this sacred day by doing good deeds and charity deeds.

Enlightenment on a spiritual level

This day is believed to be among the greatest for capturing the Moon’s full energy. It is believed that the Moon bestows its blessings through its divine rays on the day of Purnima, therefore in order to obtain the blessings, one must offer Arghya to the deity Moon after puja and spend some time in the moonlight.

Perform Satyanarayan Puja

This is one of the holiest days to worship Lord Vishnu in the form of Lord Satyanarayan and perform Satyanarayan Puja.
