“Why did he become big?”: Khabib Nurmagomedov shuts down return rumors likens comeback talk to Tyson Fury cycle

Khabib Nurmagomedov does not talk about fighting much these days. He is retired, focused on coaching, and usually stays clear of comeback talk. But when Tyson Fury announced yet another return to boxing, Khabib could not help but smile and share his honest thoughts. Fury recently confirmed he will fight Arslanbek Makhmudov on April 11, after spending more than a year away from the ring. His comeback follows a tough loss to Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024, where Fury lost their rematch by unanimous decision. Not long after that fight, Fury announced retirement once again, the fifth time in his career. That history is exactly what Khabib was reacting to.

Khabib Nurmagomedov explains why Tyson Fury always seems to come back

During a recent interview, Khabib Nurmagomedov was asked about Tyson Fury’s latest return and whether he could ever see himself doing something similar. His answer was blunt, playful, and very honest.“I think Tyson Fury has come out of retirement five times. Every summer, he retires. I think before vacation, he announces he’s retiring, then he spends all his money, and then comes back. This is how I feel,” Khabib said. He made it clear that his comments were not meant as criticism. “Tyson is a great champion, you know. I think he’s coming back against a Dagestani boxer. Of course, I’m going to watch this fight. It’s always fun to watch Tyson Fury.”Khabib did not hint at his own return. Instead, his words sounded more like someone who enjoys the sport without needing to be in it anymore. This is not the first time Khabib has spoken highly of Fury. Back in March 2020, Khabib compared Fury’s legacy with Jon Jones during an interview with TNT Fight Sports. His view surprised many fans.“Jon Jones, last three fights, he fights guys who have what? Three-or-four-win streak?” Khabib said. “If you want to build yourself into a legend, you have to take risks.” He then pointed to Fury’s path. “For example, Tyson Fury, why did he become big? He fight Wladimir Klitschko and beat him, then he fought Deontay Wilder and drew, then he fought him again and beat him. He dominated him.”For Khabib, greatness is not just about winning. It is about who you fight and when you take the risk. That belief explains why he respects Fury’s comebacks, even if he jokes about them.
