Delhi bizman kicked, punched, beaten with stones for objecting to harassment of women; video captures brutal assault

NEW DELHI: A 26-year-old businessman was assaulted by a group of men after he intervened to stop youths from harassing three women in south Delhi’s Mehrauli on Monday. Police have arrested all the four men allegedly involved in the assault. Mukesh Kumar (26) lives with his family in Sangam Vihar and runs a transport business. The family said the attack soon after they attended a wedding at Mukesh’s maternal uncle’s house on Monday. While the rest of the family returned home that night, Mukesh decided to return later the same night. While on his way home, he decided to stop at a stall on IGNOU Road for a cup of tea. A police source said: “The men began making lewd remarks and harassing the women. Mukesh intervened, asking them to stop, which appeared to anger the men. What began as a verbal confrontation quickly escalated into a fight. The attackers allegedly knocked Mukesh to the ground and beat him up mercilessly, even throwing stones at him.” Mukesh was seriously injured. Bystanders rushed to help. A video of the incident circulating on social media shows Mukesh being attacked at a street corner. Even after he lost consciousness, the men continued kicking him. An elderly man attempted to intervene when one of the attackers tried to hit Mukesh with bricks. In the footage, some of the assailants can be seen restraining Mukesh while others beat him up, tearing his clothes and thrashing him. In another clip, the victim is seen lying on the ground with bloodstains on his clothes. Police got a PCR call about the attack on Feb 3 near Anupam Apartments on IGNOU Road. A team from the local police station went to the scene. Mukesh was admitted to Pt Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital for urgent treatment and later shifted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. A case has been registered under Sections 110 (attempt to commit culpa-ble homicide), 79 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
