Man stabbed for ‘speaking Bengali’ in Madhya Pradesh

MALDA: A Malda man was stabbed in Madhya Pradesh, with his family alleging he was targeted for speaking Bengali. Syed Sk (37), a resident of Paharpur village , had been working as a cloth vendor in MP’s Sagar for nine years. On Feb 19, he was attacked in Samnapur village, allegedly robbed and stabbed multiple times. He underwent surgery at Bundelkhand Hospital.His wife, Nurefa Biwi, said he had recently expressed fear after being taunted for speaking Bengali.Trinamool MP Samirul Islam, chairman of West Bengal Migrant Workers’ Welfare Board, said, “We arranged for his treatment and an FIR has been lodged. At the behest of Abhishek Banerjee, we are looking after him and his family. Once he recovers, we will bring him back and rehabilitate him within the state.”
