IndiGo flights to get costlier: Airline to levy fuel surcharge from March 14

IndiGo will levy fuel surcharge ranging from Rs 425 to Rs 2,300 on its domestic and international flights following a sharp increase in aviation turbine fuel prices due to the ongoing tension in Middle East.In a statement, the airline said that the fuel surcharge will be imposed on tickets from March 14.“IndiGo, India’s leading airline, is introducing a fuel charge on domestic and international routes, effective 00:01hrs on 14th March, 2026. This measure is taken due to the significant surge in fuel prices following the ongoing geopolitical issues in the Middle East. IATA’s Jet Fuel Monitor indicates an 85+% increase in fuel prices for the region,” the airline said.“Aviation Turbine Fuel represents a significant share of airlines’ operating cost. This sudden and steep increase will have a material impact on all airlines’ costs and network, including IndiGo’s. While offsetting the entire impact of this fuel price surge requires a very substantial adjustment to fares, IndiGo has introduced a relatively smaller amount as a Fuel Charge keeping in mind the consequential burden on customers,” it added.Earlier, Air India and Air India Express also announced fuel surcharge of Rs 399 on each domestic flight ticket from March 12 due to rising operating costs. The airline group said the surcharge will be implemented in phases across domestic and international routes due to the steep rise in jet fuel prices linked to the geopolitical situation in the Gulf region. In the first phase, a fuel surcharge of Rs 399 per domestic ticket will be imposed from March 12. The same surcharge will also apply to flights to SAARC destinations, the airline said in a statement on Tuesday. For West Asia routes, the surcharge will be USD 10 per ticket, while the charge for Africa flights will increase by USD 30 to USD 90. The surcharge for Southeast Asia services will rise by USD 20 to USD 60.
