Congress seeks West Asia debate; already briefed in detail: Government

NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha was briefly adjourned on Monday as Congress demanded a discussion on the West Asia crisis but received no concrete assurance from the treasury benches, with parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju saying that extensive statements, including from PM Modi, have already been made on the issue in Parliament. The demand for the debate was raised after Question Hour, with Congress MP Manish Tewari saying there should be a discussion on the West Asia crisis and its implications.Rijiju told the protesting members that the government is ready to talk with them, but highlighted that Modi, besides external affairs minister S Jaishankar and oil minister Hardeep Singh Puri, has made statements on the issue in both the Houses.“Whenever there is a crisis, we are all together, and there is no politics,” he said, pointing out that the government had convened an all-party meeting to address concerns. As opposition MPs persisted with their demand, Speaker Om Birla briefly adjourned proceedings. Proceedings went on uninterrupted after the House reconvened.
