In addition, YouTube will pay $2.5 million to other Trump allies, including the American Conservative Union.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"5\"\/>The Google-owned platform suspended Trump on January 12, 2021, citing \u201cconcerns about the ongoing potential for violence,\u201d joining Facebook and Twitter in blocking him after the Capitol riot. Trump sued YouTube and Alphabet CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/topic\/sundar-pichai\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\">Sundar Pichai<\/a>, claiming he was wrongfully censored under \u201cnon-existent or broad, vague and ever-shifting standards.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"10\"\/>His posting privileges were cut off after the Capitol attack left more than 140 police officers injured during clashes with pro-Trump rioters attempting to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden\u2019s 2020 election victory.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"12\"\/>Legal experts have described Trump\u2019s First Amendment claims as weak, noting that constitutional free speech protections apply to government restrictions, not private companies. YouTube argued in a 2021 filing that it \u201cis not a state actor and its exercise of editorial discretion over its private service does not implicate Plaintiffs\u2019 First Amendment rights.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"15\"\/>Watchdog group Media Matters criticised the deal, calling it \u201cshameful and shortsighted.\u201d Its president Angelo Carusone said, \u201cYouTube\u2019s capitulation is shameful and shortsighted. Needlessly folding now will only help encourage Trump\u2019s efforts to stifle dissent by bringing media and online platforms to heel.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/>The settlement comes as major tech and media firms continue to resolve Trump\u2019s lawsuits. Earlier this year, Elon Musk\u2019s X paid $10 million to settle a case with Trump, while Meta agreed in January to pay $25 million, most of which will fund Trump\u2019s presidential library.
