Almost every Indian has grown up reading his dohas. Born into a Muslim weaver family and despite not being formally educated, he was a maverick with words and wove couplets that shook the foundations of rigid Hinduism and Islam alike. A disciple of Sant Ramananda, Kabir faced threats from all sides for calling out empty piety, but his raw, colloquial poetry in Hindi dialects spoke straight to the soul, influencing Sikhs (his verses grace the Guru Granth Sahib) and sparking the Kabir Panth.<!-- --> He died in Maghar around 1518, sparking a tug-of-war over his body between Hindus and Muslims, fitting for a man who belonged to no one but the divine.
