Bengaluru horror: Auto driver arrested for abusing, attacking northeast woman; asked her to speak in Kannada

BENGALURU: An auto driver attached to an app-based taxi booking firm was arrested on charges of abusing and attacking a 28-year-old woman after she cancelled the ride she had booked. The incident occurred at Hanumantappa Layout in Kyasalahalli, Kothanur, on the night of October 2. The victim, a call centre employee from the northeast, recorded the driver’s behaviour on her mobile phone and uploaded the video on social media. After the video went viral, Kothanur police contacted the woman and urged her to file a complaint. She initially refused, but later lodged the complaint on Thursday, following which police arrested the driver, identified as Pavan H. S. (21), a resident of Yelahanka and originally from Mandya. Pavan, who is unmarried, has been remanded to judicial custody at Bengaluru Central Prison. According to the complainant, the trouble began around 7 pm on October 2 when she booked an auto from her home in Kyasalahalli to Banaswadi, but the vehicle failed to reach her location. “After waiting for around seven minutes, I flagged down another auto passing by and booked it to reach Banaswadi. Then I cancelled my ride, and at that moment, the auto I had originally booked reached the spot,” the woman, who has been living with her younger sister for the past two years, stated in her complaint. “Auto driver Pavan blocked my vehicle and asked why I had cancelled his ride. I tried to respond in English, but he got angry. He asked me to speak in Kannada and abused me. He started recording me on his mobile, so I did the same,” the complaint read. “As I tried to leave, he (Pavan) became angrier and hit my hand,” she added. In the video, the driver of the auto in which the woman was seated is heard advising Pavan that he would get into trouble if the video was uploaded online and a police case was filed.
